What to Do When Claude Is Down

Claude fails as several distinct products: the API, the web and desktop apps, and Claude Code. They share a name and a model, but not a serving path. The API can be healthy while claude.ai is not, and the reverse happens too.

For API integrations, the failure to check first is not availability but rate limiting and overload. A 429 or a 529 is not an outage, it is capacity, and it usually needs backoff rather than escalation. Retrying immediately on a 529 makes things worse for you and everyone else on that capacity. Exponential backoff with jitter is the correct response and it is worth having in place before you need it.

Model-specific behaviour matters too: an incident can affect one model while others serve normally, so a failing call is worth retrying against a different model before concluding the platform is down. If you have a fallback model configured, an incident is the moment it earns its keep.

Claude Status Page vs PulsAPI
